Our courses impart a sound understanding of economic and constitutional principles. The courses focus on the subject of liberty and its broad application in American life. For successful completion of the program, each student earns nine academic credits from Georgetown University.
Political Science. Nowhere on earth do men and women of African or Hispanic descent enjoy greater personal freedom than in the United States. Yet, many minority students lack an understanding of our Constitution and an appreciation for the blessings of liberty, which are important requisites for individuals who will accept the challenge of leadership.
In the Lynde and Harry Bradley Course on Constitutional Principles, Professor William B. Allen leads the students on an in-depth investigation of the Constitution and other founding documents. Upon completion of the course, the students understand the nation’s founding principles and the reasons for America’s democratic longevity and prosperity. [Read syllabus: GOVT 230] *pdf file
Economics. Many of the problems that plague the African American community – such as high unemployment rates, an inadequate supply of comfortable and affordable housing, and failing schools – are the unintended consequences of faulty economic policy. In the Friedman Billings Ramsey Course on Economic Principles, Professor Thomas C. Rustici teaches students the principles of macro and micro economics that are essential to effectively analyzing policy alternatives. Public Policy Seminar. Students participating in the Institute become well aware of the structure of the federal government and the constitutional mandates of its executive, legislative and judicial branches. This seminar focuses on the most effective methods that citizens can use to influence the various branches of government. It focuses also on the character and integrity that are necessary for effective governance. Students participate in this seminar during both summers in the Institute. Relationship with Georgetown. The Institute for Responsible Citizenship is an independent educational organization that is proud to have Georgetown University as its academic partner. Georgetown is a world renowned university which provides an environment of educational excellence that we want our scholars to become accustomed.
