  Activities

In addition to the classes and internships, the students participate in many other activities that are both educational and social in nature.

One of the highlights of the summer is a private tour of the West Wing of the White House, directed by a member of the President's staff. The students have the opportunity to see the Cabinet Room, the Roosevelt Room and, of course, the Oval Office. They enjoy taking pictures in the Rose Garden, just outside the Oval Office, and in the Press Briefing Room in front of the famous White House sign. On another occasion, the students return to the White House for a briefing on public policy issues.

The students tour the United States Capitol. In fact, they attend a briefing at which the sit on the floor of the House of Representatives and listen to remarks by members of Congress.

Each summer, the young men visit the Supreme Court as a guest of one of the Justices. In 2003, Justice Clarence Thomas hosted the students on the day the Court announced its decisions in the University of Michigan affirmative action cases. Following the hand-down of decisions, Justice Thomas spent more than an hour with the students in the Lawyer's Lounge, discussing the decisions and other matters of interest to his guests. Following the briefing, the students toured the Supreme Court. In 2004, Justice Thomas hosted the junior class for a three hour discussion around a conference table in the Retired Chief Justices' Chambers. The seniors met with Justice Anthony Kennedy to discuss the workings of the Court.

The students also meet many individuals who are influential in various areas. Each summer, the students rate their visit to the office of Congress John Lewis (D-GA) as a highlight of the summer. In 2003, as the country was celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the March on Washington, Congressman Lewis talked about his experiences n the Civil Rights Movement and specifically about the planning and execution of the March. Mr. Lewis, as president of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, was an organizer of the March and was the youngest speaker there. He was at that time barely older than the students to whom he was speaking. In 2004, he focused on the Freedom Rides, an aspect of the Civil Rights Movement that he believes does not receive the attention it deserves.

Other individuals who have shared their experiences with the students include General Colin Powell, Vernon Jordan, Judge Janice Rogers Brown, Senate Chaplain Barry Black, HUD Secretary Alphonso Jackson, Education Secretary Roderick Paige, White House Domestic Policy Advisor Claude Allen, FOX sportscaster James Brown and top executives at the investment bank Friedman Billings Ramsey.

The students have sat on a stage behind the President of the United States as he delivered a speech on Social Security reform and financial literacy, attended a White House welcoming ceremony for the Prime Minister of India, and participated in writing workshops conducted by some of the top writers in Washington. They have attended concerts and Major League Baseball games. And they have enjoyed many other social activities.
