In
2009, four Institute scholars will participate in a specialized program that
will operate within our core program. During their first summer, these
students will be exposed to the economic and constitutional principles that
are important for the development of good citizens. They will intern at
agencies that provide services to young people. They will participate in
workshops with outstanding professors who serve as the Academy’s chief
academic advisors, Dr. Nadia Ward of Yale University and Dr. Freddye Davy of
Hampton University. These workshops provide an overview of urban education
and critical approaches to curriculum development, instruction, and
mentorship. When the Institute scholars return for their second summer, they
will execute our program for high school students. In 2010, we will select
sixteen high school sophomores for each of our two ten-day residential
sessions. Following the model of our core program, these high achieving
students will be expected to return, as rising seniors, for a second summer.
